Miniruwani Samarakoon establishes records in all three events

The swimming prodigy from Kandy - Miniruwani Samarakoon of Hillwood College was the 'star' on day three of the 4-day Sri Lanka Schools Senior and Junior Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday. She established records in all three events she swam in the under-13 age category.

Miniruwani had records in the 200 metres Individual Medley - 3.01.78 secs. 100 metres Breast Stroke - 1.24.54 secs. and in the 100 metres Butterfly - 1.19.33. She was the outstanding swimmer and set three records at the meet which is the final trial to pick swimmers for the up coming dual meet between Sri Lanka Schools and Chennai Schools to be held in Colombo in the latter part of the year.

The others to establish records were Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus in the girls under-13 - 200 metres Back Stroke - 2.55.25 secs. Uma's sister Prabha also of Musaeus in the girls under-11 - Back Stroke - 1.25.16 secs. and Shirantha Ariyawardena of St. Peter's College in the boys under-11 - 100 metres Back Stroke - 1.25.98 secs.

Laksitha Kosgodage of St. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia won both the 3 metres spring board (158.90 pints) and platform diving (185.60 points) boys under-19. Sri Lanka champion women's diver Harini Jayasekera of Visakha had wins in the girls under-19 one metre spring board (229.85 points) and 3 metres spring board (275.65 points). Anees brothers Adhil and Ashif of Asian International School fared prominently in the boys under-13 one metre spring board, 3 metres spring board and platform diving. Esiri Kankanage and Chanaka Wickremasinghe both from Royal also performed well in both one metre and three metres spring board diving.

S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia took the lead in the boys overall championship with 193 points followed by Royal 166 points and St. Joseph's College third with 149 points. In the girls overall, Mahamaya College, Kandy with 239 points is on top. Ladies College second with 173 points and Musaeus third with 145 points at the end of the third day.

The meet will be continued today from 8.00 a.m.

Suranimala Rajapakse, Minister of School Education will be the chief guest.
