Royal all the way - thrash S. Thomas' 38/3

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Royal retained the Michael Gunaratne Trophy in style when they completely outplayed a hapless Thomian outfit with a record breaking 38 points (a goal, 5 tries, and 2 penalties) to 3 (a penalty) win in their annual inter school rugby encounter played at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday.

Royal improved on their previous highest number of points in a Royal -Thomian encounter which was 34-0 in 1973 under Michael Muller with their 38-0 win yesterday.

Royal gave an accomplished display when their forwards and backs teamed up to a lethal combination giving no chance to the Thomians who could not do much to stop the Royal try-spree.

The scoreboard would have looked more convincing if Royal had a reliable place-kicker to give them the extra points.

Royal opened scoring almost with the opening whistle with an under the post penalty by Chamara Dhanawansa. The Thomians came into equal terms when fly half, Wasim Thajudeen put overal penalty.

Thereafter it was a try orgy by the Royalist who led 11-3 at the half-time.

Wingers Lakshaman Dissanayake, Kushan Athukorale, fullback Dhanawansa, Rajith Jayasundera, prop Pujitha Jayakody and fly half Ishan Perera scored tries for the winners.

Orville Fernando refereed.

Royal beat S. Thomas' 17-0 in the junior game.
