Construction boom expected next year by Elmo Leonard Sri Lanka would experience a boom in construction next year. Tenders for reconstruction of the A9 roadway between Jaffna and Kandy would be called soon, President of National Construction Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) D.D. Wijemanne said. The next budget, scheduled for November 2003, would be a development directed budget, Wijemanne told the media and the NCASL membership in Colombo recently. Construction provides a boost to economic development. The construction industry is also said to be the life blood of an economy. A large number of overseas companies from the 16 countries which make up the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors Association (IFAWPCA) are expected to exhibit construction equipment, machinery and building materials at the Construction Exhibition 2002, scheduled from August 18 to 20 at the BMICH, Colombo. The first construction exhibition, organised by the Association, was held at the BMICH last year. Sixty five companies displayed a range of products and services of the construction industry, including Indian, Nepalese and Maldivian companies. Around 400 foreign delegates from IFAWPCA countries are expected to participate at the 32nd international IFAWPCA Conference, which would coincide with this year's exhibition. The 4000 Sri Lankan members of NCASL are also expected to participate in the conference. PEPCO India, which organises exhibitions in India, has teamed up with CDC Conventions (Pvt) Ltd., the local exhibition organiser for the event. PEPCO will try to lure Indian companies into participating in the Sri Lankan event. IFAWPCA members were also canvassing in their countries for construction companies to participate in this event. An extensive promotion campaign for the exhibition had also been carried out at the recently concluded National Academy of Construction Exhibition in Hydrabad, President IFAWPCA Saliya Kaluarachchi said. Construct Exhibition 2002 is expected to have local and foreign companies displaying products, equipment, techniques and concepts used by the modern construction industry worldwide. This would be a big boost to the construction industry in Sri Lanka, which is ready to take up new challenges, Wijemanne said. It is anticipated that the exhibition would attract over 75 companies and over 140 stalls. The exhibition would be a good opportunity for prospective investors in the construction industry and the real estate sector. An attempt is being made to project Sri Lanka as a leading networking platform and resources centre for the building and construction industry in South East Asia and beyond. Construct Exhibition 2002 is endorsed by the Ministries of Transport, Highways and Aviation, Housing and Plantation Infrastructure, Urban Public Utilities and the Sri Lankan Convention Bureau. |
