Unawatuna beach is now being ranked as one of the 12 best beaches in the world. The resort began operations 20 years ago with only four rooms, by the present Managing Director, Vinod de Silva. General Manager, Dimantha Jayasuriya joined Unawatuna Beach Resort in 1983 when it stood with 22 rooms. With hard work put in by the De Silva - Jayasuriya duo, today the Unawatuna Beach Resort has spread to three areas and stands majestically with 80 air conditioned rooms offering all modern facilities of a five-star resort. The picutesque swimming pool which is in close proximity to the ocean has been masterly crated overlooking the new wing. The entire resort has lived to the concept of a fishing village with a creatively crafted fisherman at the entrance. The walk down to the sea from Unawatuna Beach Resort bring you to an area which is known as one of the world's 12 best beaches. The colour of sea is breathtaking, perhaps the best view would be from above sea level. Most of the furnishing effects specially in the guest rooms have been done using material and items found in the Southern area. Cloth used for gunny bag and choir are some of the items used for the artistic finishing touches. The ceiling of the dining area is decked with a neat array of pun mats. A massive refurbishment done in 1999, has now transformed the resort to a star class hotel. The Restaurant Barracuda serves International and Sri Lankan cuisine prepared by Executive Chef. K. A. Gnanatilaka and his team of chefs and cooks. The Theme nights offered by the resort with live entertainment and cultural shows has become very popular amongst guests. The concept of selecting fresh fish just brought to shore by fishermen, is a unique feature at the Unawatuna Beach Resort. For those interested in the legend of Ramayana and Indian culture, one could see the Rumasala mountains now declared a herbal sanctuary. Since the present General Manager, Dimantha Jayasuriya joined Unawatuna Beach Resort, the hotel has seen a tremendous up-grading of facilities and service offered to guests. Hospitality seems the keynote at the resort, judging from the warm and friendly service offered by the ever smiling staff. This theme resort is marketed by Connaissance Hotel Management (Pvt)Ltd. depicting a typical fishing village concept. Everything about this 80 room star class resort, is nature itself in all its grandeur. |
