Indian coastguard probes : Mystery ship in Arabian Sea by Ramani Kangaraarachchi Military Intelligence officials are keenly watching the Indian Coastguards probe into a mystery ship discovered abandoned in the Arabian Sea off India's South Western coast. The authorities in both countries are concerned that the ship, an old medium-sized cargo vessel, may have been used to off-load a substantial cargo of clandestine weapons and military equipment either in Sri Lanka or in India. Navy Chief Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri told the Sunday Observer that the Sri Lankan naval authorities were in communication with the Indian authorities in this regard and were awaiting further information. The mystery ship, identified as the MV 'Murtada' and believed to be owned by a Libyan firm, was found completely empty and minus any crew when Indian Coastguard officers boarded it last week on the high seas 170 kilometres off the Indian coast. Admiral Sandagiri said that bad weather conditions in that area had delayed Indian investigations. However, the Indian Coastguard had taken charge of the ship which is expected to be brought to an Indian harbour very soon for investigations, according to Indian sources. |
