Power restored to 47,000 households in Jaffna by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has successfully restored electricity to approximately 47,000 households in the Jaffna peninsula from last week. The board will extend its supply to rural areas in the peninsula on the derective of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya, in keeping with the government's peace process, senior CEB sources at Jaffna's principal power station at Chunnakam said. Northern CEB sources said that steps will be taken to supply electricity for 8,000 households in Jaffna before the end of the year with priority for the first 5,000 during the next two months, the sources added. The CEB has enhanced its power capacity from 3.5 MW to 26.5 MW, to cater to Jaffna following a decision by Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya to buy electricity from private suppliers to meet the required demand under the CEB's private power purchase programme. The damaged Chunnakam power station in Jaffna, which was defunct in the past, has been re-commissioned by the CEB and it generates a capacity of 3.5 MW. " However, at the inception it had a potential capacity of 14 MW," Northern CEB sources pointed out. |
