'Budusarana' seminar : 'Secret scheme against Buddhism'

"A secret scheme against Buddhism is being carried out in this country. A certain woman has started a program through the Internet with 21 points against Buddhism put forward in it, but no Sri Lankan had challenged or answered her. Only one Buddhist monk based in the USA has replied her, but recently he was able to reply the 21 points in the Internet, the Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thera said.

The Ven. Thera made these observations at the inaugural seminar for inculcating good student habits and discipline in daham pasal students held at the Kegalle town hall under the sponsorship of 'Budu Sarana' newspaper of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd.

The Ven. Thera said that unknown to the ordinary citizens of Sri Lanka, a program in English had been launched against Buddhism, and that conspiracy was being extended to other nations by the vested interests opposed to Buddhism. He said a program of talks against Buddhism was also being carried out and it was claimed that the contents of the Buddhist texts were unacceptable and there were some individuals who were so foolish as to believe them. Such persons did not accept the teachings of the Buddha and his disciples. Sometimes those who represent the vested interests attempted to convert such persons and those living in extreme poverty and this trend was on the increase.

The Ven. Meegoda Pannaloka Thera said that during the era of the Sinhalese kings there had been a population of about seventy-five million people in Sri Lanka but there had been no shortage of food due to the efforts of the ancient farmers. Today our society had forgotten such beneficial measures or policies and only self-centred or selfish motives made people work, mainly for themselves. Among those who addressed the seminar, were B. A. Wimalasena attorney-at-law, Additional Secretary Kegalle District, Bandula Nagasinghe and Editor 'Budu Sarana', D. Araththanage.

The seminar was held under the chairmanship of the Minister of Wayamba Development Jayatilaka Podinilame. Chairman Kegalle Urban Council Jude Perera and several other distinguished invitees were also present.
