Plantation TUs to meet CEF tomorrow by P. Krishnasamy Major trade unions representing the bulk of the plantation workers of the Central hill country are due to meet the Ceylon Employers' Federation (CEF) tomorrow to negotiate a fresh Collective Agreement covering wages and terms of employment of these workers. The Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) led by Minister Arumugan Thondaman, the pro-UNP Lanka Jathika Estate Workers' Union (LJEWU) led by Rajah Senaviratne, and the Joint Plantation Trade Union Centre (JPTUC) consisting of 12 smaller plantation TUs will negotiate with the CEF which represents the 21 Regional Plantation Companies on proposals put forward by the two sides. The Collective Agreement that has been in force for 2 1/2 years as at June 30, 2002 gave the worker a basic daily wage of Rs. 101/- with a cost of Living supplement of Rs. 15/- and an attendance allowance of Rs. 5/-. CWC leader and Minister, Arumugan Thondaman, told the "Sunday Observer" that they would demand a "reasonable wage increase" at tomorrow's conference. He declined to say what action the CWC would resort to if the wage increase was not forthcoming. |
