No LTTE links : 'Northeastern Herald' independent newspaper The 'Northeastern Herald' newspaper, which is to be published shortly, is an independent journal funded by the Government of Sweden and not an LTTE publication as reported in the 'Sunday Observer' of July 7 under the headline 'LTTE plans Sinhala newspaper, radio' the Editor of the new journal, Mr. J.S. Tissainayagam, has said in a letter of clarification. In his letter to the 'Sunday Observer', Mr. Tissainayagam states: "The North-Eastern Herald, which we intend to publish this month has been erroneously mentioned as a LTTE paper. "We wish to inform you that the North-Eastern Herald will be an independent publication. It was originally published in 1992 as a monthly political magazine. The North-Eastern Herald is being re-launched as part of a project funded by the government of Sweden to promote sustainable peace, good governance and building of democratic institutions through devolution. "Your news item has caused irreparable damage to our publication and our reputation as independent journalists. And more importantly, the said news item constitutes a serious threat to our security in that it would inevitably instigate extremist elements to act against us and our publication. We wish to say this in the light of the fact that the State media has, in the past, persecuted independent Tamil journalists by branding them as LTTE agents." |
