Govt. tells private bus owners to consider fare reductions by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The Government has asked the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) to consider ways of reducing private bus fares with a second decrease in fuel prices which are on the way. The Chairman of LPBOA Gemunu Wijeratne said that a meeting of islandwide LPBOA representatives will be called next Wednesday in Colombo after which a decision will be taken. A spokesman for the State Transport Ministry said that according to the Transport Policy which got Cabinet approval last month, an amendment can be made only once a year, or with a change of running cost of more than 10 per cent. He also added that both the Government and the private bus owners recognize the problem so that there will not be a dilemma over the issue. Mr. Wijeratne said that it was after a year and three months that the private buses levied a fare hike. “Fuel is only one element and other elements related to our service should be considered. The other thing is the transport policy. How can we go beyond that?” he asked. |
