12 officials from abroad for Asian Athletic Championships by LESLIE FERNANDO Twelve qualified officials from five countries Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Philippines have been invited to officiate at the largest-ever sporting event, the 14th Asian Athletic Championships hosted by Sri Lanka and to be held from August 8 to 12 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. All officials have confirmed their availability to be in Colombo for this big event. The invitation to these officials is a part of the exchange program between Sri Lanka and the other countries. A spokesman of the Amateur Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AAA) said that our officials, will in turn, get an opportunity to officiate at International meets. This is a very good move by the AAA to invite the foreign officials to be here for the meet. The newly laid track at the Sugathadasa Stadium will be ready by July 22 according to a member of the Organising Committee of the Asian Athletic Championships. The postponed 80th Athletic Nationals conducted by the AAA will be held July 26, 27, 28 and 29 and it will be the final trial to pick athletes to participate at the Asian Athletic Championships. Malaysia is the first country to send the final entry. Seven athletes will participate and there will be four officials. Its 25 days to go for the 43-nation Asian Athletic Championships. The AAA is making elaborate arrangements to make this event a great success. The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) (Print Media sponsor) and Dialog GSM (Sri Lanka team sponsor and official wb hoster) are two of the six Gold sponsors of the event. |
