S. Thomas' keep Lady Jayatilleke Shield with 13/8 win

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

S. Thomas' retained the Lady Jayatilleke Memorial Shield for the fourth year in succession when they scored a hard fought win over St. Joseph's by 13 points (2 tries and a penalty) to 8 (a try and a penalty) in their inter-school rugger match played at Havelock Park yesterday.

The Joes started on a bright note making daring advances into the Thomian territory but never looked like scoring due to lack of finish. The Thomians opened scoring in the 19th minute when Kevin Cameron put over a penalty. The Joes equalised when fly half Pradeep Priyantha put over a penalty.

The Thomians forged ahead when number 8 Namal Rajapakse touched down for an unconverted try. Rajapakse who gave a fine display had a hand in the second try too combining with winger Lalindra Siriwardena when Siriwardena touched down for another unconverted try.

The Thomians led 13-3 at the breather.

The Joes came back to their own when they won two line outs close to the Thomian touch line. The Thomians were penalised when the Joes line was in motion almost under the post and the ensuing five yard scrum gave them their first try of the match. Flanker Danushka Perera touched down but Pradeep Nissnaka missed an easy kick which would have reduced the deficit for the Joes.
