15-year-old Cambrian pistol shooter Suranga Fernando in Sri Lanka squad for Commonwealth Games by DILWIN MENDIS by Moratuwa Sports Correspondent Fifteen-year-old Dinesh Suranga Fernando of Prince of Wales will carry much hope for his school when he represents Sri Lanka in Air Pistol event at the Commonwealth Games to be held in Manchester from July 25 to August 4. At the young age, Suranga Fernando will be one of the youngest to represent the country at this level of competition. He is one of the seven shooters who leave for the Games next Friday. Suranga Fernando will participate in four events - Air Pistol 10 metres, Free Pistol 50 metres, Standard Pistol 25 metres and Centre Firing 25 metres. He won a Gold medal in Air Pistol 10 metres when he represented Sri Lanka in the SAF Games held in Bangladesh in 2000. It was his father Manjula Fernando who was in the Army (also a Cambrian) who encouraged Suranga in pistol shooting and he practised in his home compound where there a ten-metre range. At times Suranga goes to the Army Range at Panagoda to do a little firing before a competition and he is most grateful to the Principal of Prince of Wales - Mr. S. J. P. Wijesinghe, staff and Old Boys Association of the school for all the facilities given for him to further his interest in pistol shooting. Suranga is the second Cambrian to represent Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Games whilst being at school, the first being the late C. P. Jayasuriya in boxing. |
