First batch leaves next Friday by LAL GUNESEKERA The 15 athletes (eight men and seven women) accompanied by their manager and two coaches together with the seven shooters (two men and five women) with their manager and coach leave for England on Friday (July 19) morning for the Commonwealth Games to be staged in Manchester from July 25 to August 4. The two men's shooters are ASP Gamini Walgama and Suranga Fernando, while the five markswomen are P. I. Ramanayake, D. M. I. K. Pussella, S. Wijesuriya, A. S. Wickremasinghe and E. M. Pabawathi with Lt. Colonel B. P. Kularatne as manager and D. M. P. B. Dassnayake as coach. The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando, has also approved Chinthana Geethal Withanage as the solitary weight lifter and Gamini Gunatilleke as the manager. According to a spokesman for the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka, the rugby team (12 players and two officials) for the 7's have been sent to the NOC, but the team is scheduled to leave for England on July 29, while the rest of the contingent is scheduled to leave for England on Emirates Flight on July 22 at 3 a.m. and return on August 5 or 6. He also disclosed that Minister Johnston Fernando will be meeting the entire Sri Lanka contingent on Wednesday at 8.30 a.m. at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium together with the sponsors, Dialog GSM. Eight media personnel too will be in Manchester. The netball team includes 12 players and two officials. The players are Sashika Samarasinghe, Gishanthi Jayakody, Arunika Udayani, Damayanthi Jayatilleke, Gayanthri Lankatilleke, Thushari Dissanayake, Sandya Jayasuriya, W. M. N. M. Dhammika, Nalika Prasadini, Harshani Wijayalatha, Anjana Thulari and W. L. Anoma Sriyakanthi with Chandrani Pathiraja as the manageress and Yasa Ramachandra as chief coach. The names of the athletes, shuttlers, boxers, gymnasts, squash players and swimmers was announced exclusively in the Sunday Observer of June 30, while the events that the athletes are competing was announced on July 7. The President of the Sri Lanka NOC Hemasiri Fernando, disclosed that the parents of Sri Lanka's bronze medallist in the 200 metres at the Olympic Games in Melbourne Australia - Susanthika Jayasinghe, too, will be in Manchester to see their "star" daughter who is expected to strike gold. |
