Ratmalana 'A' take top award : Treat deaf children as part of own society asks Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena

by A. C. DE SILVA

Matara District MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena who 'stood in' as chief guest for Minister Milinda Moragoda at the Deaf Schools cricket tournament last Sunday at Moratuwa, was visibly moved by the occasion and was full of praise for sponsors Caltex Limited for giving the opportunity to the less fortunate to display their talents.

Managing Director of Caltex Kishu Gomes has taken the lead in caring for the unfortunate ones and this is the right step. "No one is infallible and we should treat the deaf children as part of our society and not keep them out," Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

He said that when Minister Moragoda made a request to him to come for the cricket tournament, he did so with all willingness so that he could at first sight see the talents of the less fortunate ones and do something to lift their morale so that the less fortunate ones could inter-mingle with normal citizens.

Mr. Yapa said that he came to know that there is a shortage of computers for the deaf institutions and he gave an assurance that he would speak to Minister Milinda Moragoda - the Minister of Economic Reform, Science and Technology and get some assistance to the deaf establishments.

Kishu Gomes - the Managing Director of Caltex said that his establishment has become a part of the deaf schools. He said that he made a promise at the netball tournament to assist the less fortunate ones to assist them in whatever way possible and the sponsorship of the Deaf Schools softball cricket tournament was one such deed.

He said that normally establishments go for sponsorship of big events where they get mileage, but he said that his establishment thought it was nothing but right to assist the less fortunate ones - the blind and the deaf and make them feel as part of our society.

He said that he has planned a big sponsorship drive that runs into 20 or 25 lakhs or more and two representatives of his establishment have met the authorities in charge of blind and those in charge of the deaf schools so that their assistance could be streamlined not only in sport, but in other areas as well. "The less unfortunate ones should not be sidelined. We should support them and I call upon all to join hands with Caltex to help the unfortunate ones," Kishu Gomes said.

Ratmalana 'A' won the Deaf Schools six-a-side tournament beating Tangalle 'A' by two wickets in the final.
