Old Boys Cricket quadrangular Aug 3 and 4

The 35th annual 50 over Old Boys Cricket quadrangular hosted by Old Benedictine Sports Club will be held on August 3 and 4 while a new event has been included this year - the inaugural 25 over veterans tournament for over 40 July 27 and 28.

Basil Perera, the Chairman Organising Committee at a well attended press briefing held on Friday night at St. Benedict's College Staff Room said that over-40 veterans tournament will be hosted for the first time by Old Peterite SC and all matches will be played at St. Peter's College grounds.

On July 27, Old Joes vs Old Bens at 9.30 a.m. and Old Anthonians vs Old Peterites at 2.00 p.m. The third place match will be at 9.30 a.m. on July 28 and the finals at 2.00 p.m.

Former St. Sebastian's College cricketer Sunil Wickremanayake will be the adjudicator.

There will be awards for the best batsman, best bowler, best fielder and man-of-the-final. All trophies jointly sponsored by the four schools.

Basil Perera said that the main quadrangular tournament will be on August 3 and 4, and he thanked the five sponsors - Shell Company of Sri Lanka, United Tractor and Equipment Ltd., East/West (Marketing) Pvt Limited, Jupiter Trading and ATE Lanka (Pvt) Limited for coming forward to assist the organisers.

The two semi-finals will be played on August 3 - Old Bens vs Old Joes at Kotahena at 9.30 a.m. and Old Peterites vs Old Anthonians at Darley Road.

The final on August 4 at 9.30 a.m. at Kotahena.

The tally stands at Old Bens 2 times winners Old Joes and Old Peterites 9 each (with 3 joint winners) and Old Anthonians 8.

Last year, Old Bens emerged champions.

The champions will be presented the challenge trophy jointly sponsored by four schools. In addition, there will be awards for the best batsman (trophy donated by Nevin Noyahr in memory of Basil Noyahr), best bowler (trophy donated by Ruwan Waidiyaratne in memory of Cecil Waidiyaratne former Army Commander), best fielder (trophy donated by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin, in memory of Johny Martin) man-of-the-final (trophy donated Pradeep Morais in memory of Premanath Moraes).

Test Player Romesh Kaluwitharana will be the Adjudicator. Two former Benedictine captains Lal Wickrematunga will be the chief guest while Neville Casiechetty will be the guest of honour.

Rev. Bro. Nimal Gurusinghe, Director, St. Benedict's College, Tilak Peiris (Past President OBSC), Justice Asoka de Silva (Old Anthonian SC), Kumar Sabaratnam (OBSC), Felix Perumal (Old Joes), Mano Chanmugam (Old Peterite) were associated at the press briefing.
