S. Thomas' and Mahamaya are boys and girls overall champs

S. Thomas' College Mt. Lavinia and Mahamaya College, Kandy put up splendid performances to become boys and girls overall champions in swimming while Asian International School and St. Joseph's College became joint champions in the boys diving and Visakha Vidyalaya girls diving champions at the 26th National Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships conducted by NAASU and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium Pool yesterday.

The Thomians collected 226 points in the boys swimming, Ananda College with 213 points second and Royal College third with 192 points. In the girls overall, Mahamaya College had 272 points to take the top spot followed by Ladies College second with 251 points and Musaeus College third with 206 points.

AIS and St. Joseph's College had 51 points each in the boys diving and Royal 50 points in third place. Visakha Vidyalaya in the girls diving first with 64 points, Ecole Francaise De Colombo second with 30 points and Anula Vidyalaya third with 27 points.

Six new meet records were set by Mayuni Raheem of Otter AC in the girls under-12 - 50 metres breast stroke - 40.55 secs and 50 metres back stroke - 38.10 secs, Raghavan Madawala of S. Thomas' College boys under-19 - 50 metres breast stroke - 32.49 secs, Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent girls under-19 - 50 metres free style - 29.61 secs, Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus College girls under-16 - 400 metres individual medley - 6.2.82 secs and Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College girls under-14 - 50 metres free style - 30.58 secs.

Meanwhile, Trinity College, a force to reckon in swimming a couple of years back, came back strongly to fare prominently in the lower age category.

Chathuranga Perera of AIS was the fastest among the boys in the pool, clocking 26.26 secs in the 50 metres free style while Menaka de Silva of St. Bridget's Convent was the fastest among the girls timing 29.61 secs in the 50 metres free style.

B. A. C. Fernando, Deputy General Manager, Restructuring Project, Bank of Ceylon was the chief guest. Conrad Francis solitary swimmer for the Commonwealth Games also graced the occasion.
