LG Polls in NE as scheduled by Don Asoka Wijewardena Local Government Elections which were postponed earlier, will be held on September 25 in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Ordinance despite opposition by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA). Nominations called for the previous polls will be valid and postal voting has already been completed. Printing of polling cards and ballot papers for 11 lakhs of eligible voters has also been completed, Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka announced. Deputy Commissioner (Elections), M. C. Arunthavachelvam, told the "Sunday Observer" that around 11 lakhs of registered voters are eligible to cast their vote to elect members to 52 local bodies in Jaffna, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee, excluding Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi. The Election Commission has not received nominations for these two areas. He explained that members will be elected to one Municipal Council, three Urban Councils and 12 Pradeshiya Shabhas in Jaffna, two Pradeshiya Shabhas in Mannar, one Urban Council and 4 Pradeshiya Shabhas in Vavuniya, one Municipal Council and 10 Pradeshiya Shabhas in Batticaloa,one Municipal Council, one Urban Council and 14 Pradeshiya Shabhas in Ampara and one Urban Council and 10 Pradeshiya Shabhas in Trincomalee. |
