Guidelines for paint manufacturers The Paint Manufacturers Association of Sri Lanka, comprising eight decorative, industrial and refinish (automotive) paint manufacturers, held its second annual general meeting recently. The Association was set up to ensure that the paint industry was managed responsibly and to serve its members, their customers and the community. Some of the objectives were to ensure that member firms competed with each other in a robust as well as ethical and socially accepted manner. The Association focuses on the need for practising responsible care for the safety and health of those who are directly or indirectly involved in the paint business; protecting the local environment; and ensuring that the industry contributes towards sustainable development. Ajit de Fonseka of Paints and General Industries Ltd. was appointed President of the Association, succeeding Siri Fernando, Managing Director Masons Mixtures Ltd. During its third year, the Association will strive to add value to its member firms through programmes which will assist them to continuously improve their quality standards and operations. It will also continue to ensure that the legitimate rights of its member companies in conducting their businesses are maintained. Special attention will be paid to assist the Government in reconstructing the Sri Lankan economy by contributing to the development of the construction industry, so that people who depend on this industry are able to sustain and improve their living standards. As part of its commitment to improving standards, the Association plans to sponsor a Responsible Care Award in partnership with a regulatory body or agency in the coming year. This award will focus on initiatives taken by a small or medium scale industry towards responsible care for the environment. A set of guiding principles for responsible care towards the environment by the membership of the Association will also be drawn. All members are expected to embrace these principles and in time make them an industry standard. |
