The Hill Club celebrates 125 years

The Hill Club, which is the century old tourist attraction in Nuwara Eliya, was founded in 1876 by W.H. Walker, J. Wickwar and H. Saunders.

Documentary evidence shows that the first president was Edward Rosling, elected in the year 1899. The Hill Club was established by the early Coffee, Cinchona and Tea planters and it was natural that most of the members were foreign planters.

The Hill Club still occupies the same property of 26 acres, at Grand Hotel Road. The club which started with only a Billiard room and a bar now Nuwara Eliya when it was established 125 years ago. It has 36 star class deluxe rooms inclusive of two suites - 'North Suite' and 'South Suite'.

The Hill Club has a dining room, reading room, ladies' lounge, a 'Monsoon' room, room service, four International standard tennis courts and conduct ranking tournaments, Manager/Secretary, The Hill Club, Stanley M. Gooneratne said. It now has a membership of around 750, both foreign and Sri Lankans.

The club has two bars, the 'Mens only Bar' and the 'Mix Bar'. 'We are now building three family chalets which will undoubtedly become very popular among foreign families, Gooneratne said.

Elaborate arrangements have been made to celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Hill Club on Saturday September 21. The Annual General Meeting on this day will be followed by a 'Members' Cocktail' and a gala dinner. The cocktail will be hosted by the President, Suren Wickramasinghe. Bag Pipers will provide the music for the occasion.
