Significant event for diaspora in New York A private dinner reception with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has been organized in New York by Sri Lanka First on September 19, for the Sri Lankan Diaspora. Significantly, it was on September 19, 2001 that Sri Lanka First mobilized the symbolic 'hand-holding' across the country last year. A lot of positive developments have taken place in the course of one year and the prospects of peace seem brighter than ever before. Members of Sri Lanka First are accompanying the "Invest in Peace" delegation led by the Prime Minister. At this reception a carefully selected group of top individuals are being invited to meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for a discussion on the process of peace and development in Sri Lanka, to be held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Minister G. L. Peiris and Vidar Helgessen, Deputy Foreign Minister of Norway will also grace the occasion. Minister Peiris will fly to New York directly from the peace talks in Thailand. This event is extremely significant as the Sri Lankan Diaspora can make a significant contribution in the process of reconstruction and rebuilding in the North and East as well as make investments in the South. The Government's integrated plan to mobilise business participation and resources in peace building is being wholeheartedly supported by the Diaspora. Speaking on behalf of Sri Lanka First, Mr. Jagath Fernando, President, said, "We are very proud to be associated with the 'Invest in Peace' event which has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka, the UNDP, Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, AMCHAM, the Government of Norway and Sri Lanka First." |
