Helpage opens free eye care centre

Helpage Sri Lanka will run a free Eye Care Centre for the benefit of the elders at No. 211/1, High Level Road, Nugegoda.

Dr. Akshika de Zoysa Memorial Free Eye Care Centre for Elders will be opened by Health, Nutrition and Welfare Minister P. Dayaratne on Wednesday, Sep. 18 at 10.30 a.m.

The house-turned-centre, was a donation to the Helpage by Dr. Bernard De Zoysa in memory of his late daughter Dr. Akshika De Zoysa.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has guided and supported the program with a medical team from "I Care Hospital" of India.

Helpage Executive Director N. W. E. Wijewantha told the media that their mission was to provide free intra-ocular surgery to needy elders suffering from cataracts, and, priority would be given to elders from remote areas who are unable to find bends in hospitals with facilities for surgery.

According to him, the Centre is equipped with 12 beds with latest equipment to carry out ten eye surgeries per day.

He reiterated that medical services would be strictly be for elders who have been already identified for cataract surgeries.
