'Fish rush' as Mahaweli Ganga meanders

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN  Kandy South Group Correspondent

There was a sort of a 'gold rush' or rather a 'fish rush' in the suburbs of Kandy where the great Mahaweli Ganga meanders its way before its journey is blocked by the man constructed dam at Polgolla.

On Wednesday September 11, the Mahaweli Authorities released the waters at the Polgolla which virtually drained the waters of the Mahaweli Ganga at Elephant Bath, Katugastota, and Navayalatenna where the mud had precipitated and the river itself was a trickle in the acres of mud which had formed over the years. The little water and the vast expanse of mud that formed the great Mahaweli Ganga saw large numbers of fresh water fish struggle for survival and the shoals of fish were often seen bunched in one spot. It is here the 'fish rush' began and, when the people of the area heard of the large numbers of fish surfacing in the dwindling waters, they rushed with nets, cloths and whatever with which they could trap the fish.

Many made a packet with their catch, some even caught several sackful of fish which otherwise would have perished in the mud and even would have a health hazard. Fresh water fish having being caught in such large quantities, were sold very cheap in these areas. But once the river gets filled up again, there will be no fish to catch and the prices could shoot up in the next few days. Fresh water fish has a ready market in Kandy and is a very popular dish, especially when it is fried.
