NLB prizes on the increase by DEEPAL WARNAKULASURIYA The National Lotteries Board (NLB) announces that it has marked a significant contribution to the Consolidated Fund within the last six months under the United National Government. They said the new management was capable of increasing the sales of lotteries by 20 per cent. NLB Chairman Imitiaz Ismail told the "Sunday Observer" that it has offered Rs. 821 million to the Consolidated Fund only within the year 2002. Compared with last year, he said that it was bettered by a sum of Rs. 294 million. "NLB has seven lotteries for seven days of the week and proportions of the earnings from the lotteries are credited to the Consolidated Fund through the relevant ministries or directly to the Fund," Mr Ismail said. He also said that they do not directly engage in development programmes except on some special matters. "However, the NLB has contributed to the national development projects of Housing, Education, Agriculture, Health, Power, Roadways, Irrigation, Social Welfare and many other national programmes. The amounts disbursed as prizes during the current year exceeds Rs.1.1 billion. "While the Mahajana Sampatha is the largest selling ticket, Govisetha, Vasana Sampatha and Hospital Lotto are also on the crest of the market," Mr.Ismail added. |
