Canned fish and quality rice from Trinco

Netherlands Management Cooperation Programme (NMCP) has identified four industries to provide technical assistance, Mr.S.P.C. Kumarasinghe NMCP Sri Lanka Representative and President Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka said.

According to him the NMCP has agreed to provide necessary assistance to four industries identified at the seminar. Fish processing and canning technology, Ice production for preservation of Fish, Fishing techniques and Quality improvement in Rice milling will receive technical assistance from NMCP. "These will be given priority", he added. "We went their to support the initiatives taken by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to Develop Industries in Eastern Province", he said.

Mr. Gerard Mollink country coordinator NMCP for Sri Lanka and Mr.Kumarasinghe explained how NMCP could assist the industrialists, he said. Mr. L.K. Ranawana Regional Manager IDB, Mr. M.S. Ireneuss Director Industries NEPC, Mr. S.M. Hussain Dept of Agriculture and Mr. B.K.M. Premalal-MEA Fisheries Department also took part in the discussion.

Mr. Kumarasinghe told the Sunday Observer that the seminar organised by the Ministry of Industries and Industrial Development Board Nilaveli Hotel and conducted by the NMCP had 28 industrialists. We also discussed the possibilities in assisting NEPC and NGO's in their Institutional Strengthening and Management Skills.

No sooner the formal applications are received we will make arrangements with the NMCP Head office in The Hague to send consultants to applicants establishments, he added.

Mr. Kumarasinghe further said that on the request of the President and the Board of Management of Matale Chamber of Commerce and Industry Netherlands Management Cooperation Programme (NMCP) will be assisting them to set up a Dutch style vegetable auction to get a fair price for the agro-produce in the area. The consultant for the project have already been identified by NMCP and he will arrive in Sri Lanka in end of October. We both visited the Matale Chamber of Commerce recently to make the final arrangements and held a discussion with them, he added.

Referring to the seminar organised by the Industries Ministry, Industrial Development Board Chairman Dr. Bandula Perera said that it was a follow up of the Yuga Dekma. He said that the Ministry is moving towards making the Yuga Dekma exhibition a success. "We had three main objectives in our minds to achieve when we decided to hold the exhibition in Trincomalee. The first was to provide an opportunity for both local and foreign market to find out what Trincomalee has to offer and whether Trincomalee was capable to offer.

"The second objective was to make the industrialists and business community in Trincomalee district understand what the type of market is available for them and the third objective was to send a message is to both local and foreign visitors that Trincomalee is a very safe for all activities", he said.

"I must also say that as a result of the 'Yuga Dekma Industrial Exhibition,' we keep receiving several inquiries from a number of companies interested in investing in industries in the Trincomalee district, he said.
