New Ranveta at Sri Maha Bodhi

A golden fence Ranveta around the Sacred Bo Tree will be put up at the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura on a directive from Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister at a cost of Rs. 30 million. K. H. J. Wijedasa, advisor of Sustainable Development and the Chairman of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Ranveta Fund, has decided to raise funds from the public.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already launched a fund-raising campaign through Lankan missions abroad. The Ministry will raise funds by selling certificates value of US$ 10 approximately Rs. 1,000 within Sri Lankan expatriates in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, Italy, USA, Canada, Japan, and Australia, a press release from the Ministry said.

JR's birth anniversary on Tuesday

The ninety sixth birth anniversary of the late President J. R. Jayewardene will be held at the Jayewardene Centre on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4.00 p.m. The ceremony will commence with the launch of 'JR in Cartoons'.

The book will be introduced by veteran journalist Edwin Ariyadasa, while the commemoration speech will be made by well-known broadcaster J.R.P. Suriyapperuma. Another highlight of the day will be an exhibition of rare photographs, books, papers, diaries and other important documents of President Jayewardene. The exhibition which opens at 3.30 p.m. will run for two days. A booklet titled "President Jayewardene and his constitution" will be issued free at the exhibition.

Jak-planting at Visakha on Tuesday

A jak-planting ceremony will be held at the Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo 4, on Tuesday, Sep. 17 at 8.00 a.m. under the patronage of the National Jak Development Project, initiated by the Silumina Janasetha program.

The event is organised by the students and the School Development Association of Visakha Vidyalaya. Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya will be the chief guest, while Susil Premjayantha MP will be the guest of honour. A seminar on the 'benefits of jak fruit' will also be held, and Priyadarshana Saman Kumara, President, Haritha Mithuro Association and Wasantha Wijewardene, Treasurer, Green Movement of Sri Lanka will conduct the lectures. Sponsored by the Sevana Lotteries, the ceremony will be attended by officials of Sevana Lotteries and the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited. (VF)
