Western Province overall champs at National Sports Festival

The sportsmen and sportswomen of Western Province underlined their superiority by winning the overall championship at the 28th National Sports Festival concluded at the Uyanwatte Stadium, Matara yesterday.

The individual honours went to Sriyani Kulawansa of North Western Province who was selected as the best athlete of the meet for winning the women's 100 metres hurdles with a timing of 14.04 seconds.

W. M. R. Weerakkody of Sabaragamuwa was named as the best athlete in the men's category for winning the long jump with a performance of 7.46 metres.

However, Anne Mahesi Silva of Western Province established a new meet record in the women's javelin throw clearing a distance of 51.97 metres. She erased her own record of 50.71 metres set up in 2000. Nadeeka Lakmali of Southern Province came second and Ridma Fernando of Western Province was placed third. Earlier, Damayanthi Darsha of Western Province powered her way to win the women's 400 metres title clocking 56.87 seconds. She was closely followed by Mangala Priyadarshani of Southern Province (58.92) and K. L. Gunawardena of Central Province (59.24).

Chandra Silva of North Western Province completed a sprint double winning the women's 100 metres with a timing of 12.20 seconds. Anoma Suriyarachchi of Southern Province was pushed to the second place and Premila Priyadarshani of Western Province came third.

S. N. de Silva of North Central Province bagged the women's 1500 metres title clocking 4.38.91 seconds. M. G. Rajasekera of Central Province came second (4.39.19) and Anusha Atapattu of Southern Province was placed third (4.39.78).

S. P. Hemantha of North Western Province won the men's 100 metres dash with a timing of 10.90 seconds. Danushka Perera of Western Province won the silver with 10.91 and Suminda Mendis of Southern Province took the bronze with 11.01 seconds.

D. P. S. Amarasekera of Uva Province stamped his class as a good middle distance runner while winning the gold medal in the men's 400 metres clocking 48.13 seconds. He was followed by M. Pushpakumara of North Western Province and G. N. Pushpakumara of Central Province.

In the women's triple jump final A. Dinesha of Central Province won the gold medal with a performance of 12.09 metres.

Dinesha Kumari of Southern Province took the silver and Chaturika Udayangani of Central Province won the bronze.

Gamini Jayasuriya of Sabaragamuwa Province won the gold medal in the men's 1500 metres with a timing of 3.54.34 followed by Sunil Jayaweera of Uva Province and Tilak Nishantha of Sabaragamuwa. Central Province with a timing of 3.15.30 seconds clinched the men's 4 X 400 metres relay with Southern Province coming second and Western Province third.

Sriyani Kulawansa of North Western Province won the women's 100 metres hurdles with a timing of 14.04 seconds. Inoka Umayani also from North Western Province came second and Lakshika Maduwanthi of Sabaragamuwa was placed third. V. Tharanga of Southern Province took the gold medal in the men's 110 metres hurdles clocking 15.06 seconds followed by Kumara de Silva of Western Province and T. Navagamuwa of North Western Province.

The Minister of Defence Tilak Marapane was the chief guest and distributed the awards.
