IRB to give grant to SLRFU for new headquarters building

by LAL GUNESEKERA

The International Rugby Board (IRB) is expected to release a substantial sum of money to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) towards the construction of the new headquarters building at the Old Race Course and also reimbursement for the two World Cup (Asia qualifying) games.

The President of the SLRFU Commodore Harsha Mayadunne, told the Sunday Observer that the IRB had stated in their latest communication that its newly elected finance committee will meet shortly to approve of SLRFU request for the 85 per cent air fare for the World Cup (Asia qualifying) game with Kazakhstan played in Kazakhstan and also for the expenses incurred for the postponed game with China in the same tournament staged in Colombo. The reimbursement is about Rs. 2.5 million.

He further said that SLRFU's request for an IRB grant for its new headquarter's will be taken up by the Secretary-General of the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Jamie Scott, with the IRB when he visits Dublin after the Singer-SriLankan International 7's. The SLRFU has requested for the usual grant of 100,000 pounds given for this type of request and the IRB has agreed to this matter on principal.

Commodore Mayadunne said that Sri Lanka will play at the Asian Championship (Asiad) at Bangkok, Thailand in November, but there could be changes made to the team after the Asian Games to be held later this month in Busan, South Korea. He further disclosed that the SLRFU will not scrap the President's Trophy Knock-Out Championship contrary to reports in other newspapers. He said: "We are not conducting this tournament this year due to the Asian Games and Asian Championship, but it will be worked out again next year (2003). However, we are toying with the idea of having a Inter-Club 7's tournament for the Prime Minister's Trophy to pick the side for the Hong Kong International 7's in March next year as well as the Dubai International 7's scheduled for February-March".

The 7's for the Prime Minister's Trophy may be conducted in October, while the 7's tournament for the General Denzil Kobbekaduwa Memorial Trophy will take place on schedule in February next year.
