Musical theatre for the family
Somalatha Subasinghe's musical drama productions, The Hat Seller (Toppi Velenda) and Gamarala Going to Heaven (Gamarala Divya Loketa) and Himakumariya adaptation of Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, will go on boards at the Lionel Wendt on the November 16 and 17 respectively at 3.30 p.m. and 6.45 p.m. The choreography is by Somalatha Subasinghe and Chandana Aluthge. These plays, meant to be family entertainment infuse a wide array of musical forms from folk, baila to modern music (dwarfs sing baila) and Low-Country and free movement dance forms, a blend that is sure to be a treat for both young and old. In addition, animated forests, endearing dwarfs, fairies, and the charming princess in Himakumariya, the witty and naughty monkeys and their display of acrobatics, and tricks of the Hat Seller to get back his stolen hats in the Hat Seller and the almighty Gamarala in Gamarala Divya Loketa falling back to earth are all sure to provide the audience with fun and laughter. Apart from the entertainment aspect, Somalatha's plays for children are aimed at developing ethics, morals, knowledge and more importantly the personality of the child. The Hat Seller has been performed in France, the Netherlands, India, Australia, and has been one of the five official entries from Asia at the recently concluded (In July 2002) Seoul performing arts festival for young audiences.The cast comprises Nadee Kammellaweera, Kaushalya Fernando, Chaya Sri Nammuni, Damayantha Perera, Sharmain Gunaratne, Chamila Peiris, Giriraj Kaushalya, Namal Jayasinghe, Sanjaya Hettiarachchi, Channa Kularatne, Pujith de Mel, Vishvajith, Gunasekera, Prasanna Mahagamage, Renuka Amarasekera, Niranjala Manjaree and a number of other trained actors of animation. ************************* A launch of three creations by ANJANA GAMAGE
Popular singer and music director Lakshman Wijesekara will release his novel CD titled Ra Tharuwi, a children's song cassette titled Muthu Ahurak and the Muthu Ahurak children song book with the western and eastern notations tomorrow (11) at the John de Silva Memorial Theatre at 6.00 pm. Sixteen songs have been included in the CD and most of the themes are based on love and humanism. According to Lakshman, young up and coming talented music composers like Susil Amarasinghe, Mahendra Pasquel, Navaratne Gamage, Suresh Maliyadda, Tissasiri Perera, and Ananda Perera have been given the opportunity to compose music as a special feature on this CD. The lyric writers include Yasanath Dammika Bandara, Gamini Lelvala, Upali Ranige, Vasantha Kumara Kobawaka, and Bandula Nanayakkarawasam. Muthu Ahurak is a collection of children's songs Lakshman Wijesekara had composed and performed on Rupavahini in the programme Gayana as well as in other electronic media. The lyrics for the children's songs were written by many lyricists including Jayalath Manorathne, Sumana Fernando, Kumaradasa Saputhanthri, Nilmini Ariyadasa, Rohana Dandeniya, Mahinda Algama, Bandula Nanayakkarawasam, Arisen Ahubudu and Henry Jayasena. Muthu Ahurak the notation book is a valuable asset for children to develop their music skills, and will help them to practise the music on their own. ************************* Different strokes by LAKMAL WELABADA The alluring art work he creates with oils on canvas are more alive than camera shots of the same images. Tranquil scenes depicting the beauty of nature in oils done by the celebrated artist Melville Assauw will be on display at his fourth solo painting exhibition titled as Different Strokes. It will be held at the Lionel Wendt art gallery from November 15 to 17 from 10.00am to 8.30 pm. A preview of the exhibition at which Ashley Wills, Ambassador of USA in Sri Lanka is the chief guest, will be held on November 14 at 6.30pm. a self-taught artist, Melville Assauw is well-known in the advertising industry in Sri Lanka and owns one of the top advertising agencies in the country. ************************* Fifty paintings within twenty four hours by ANJANA GAMAGE For the first time in Sri Lanka an artist will exhibit his extraordinary talent of creating 50 paintings within 24 hours. He is Bernard Perera. Self-taught and independent he has hardly any links with a 'group'. According to Bernard, the first art medium in the world is painting. "Bringing on canvas the images created in one's mind. That is my definition of art",he says. Bernard who has held six exhibitions has a leaning towards abstract art and will draw 50 oil paintings on 21 x 27 canvases with headings, during a continuous working period of 24 hours. He starts at 7.10 am on November 14 and will finish at 7.10 on the following day. The drawings will be done at the Mahaweli Centre in Colombo, in the presence of a panel of judges. They include veteran media person Edwin Ariyadasa, Prof. Vinie Vitharana, artist Joe Dambulugala, H.K. Vinie Perera, actor Ravindra Randeniya and artist Jayasiri Semage. The art exhibition will be open to the public on November 15 to 17 at the Public Library, Colombo 7 from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm. "One's talent can be displayed to others through art, especially through a live display. Although I am drawing 50 paintings within 24 hours, none of my paintings will depict the 'instant look'. There is creativity in every painting", he assured. ************************* Naribena at the Lionel Wendt Dayananda Gunawardena's Naribena and Jasaya saha Lenchina will be staged on November 15 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 3.30 and 7.00 p.m. The cast includes Wijaya Nandasiri, Rodni Warnakula, Bandula Wijeweera, Sarath Kulanga, Saddha Uthpalkanda, Lakshmi Damayanthi, Rathnaseela Perera, Subashini Hettiarachchi, Saman Gunawardena, Niluka Lokubalasooriya.
