Finishing touches : Enhance your home with curios

Home is a haven, a retreat, a place to relax and unwind. Which is why we enjoy decorating and beautifying our homes. Each person's house is unique, having a stamp and signature of its own. We select colours, fabrics and furniture to enhance our homes and reflect our tastes. What about objects d' art?

Objects like curios, paintings, vases and jars can enhance interiors, making them far more attractive. Objects also help to detract attention from the drab or displeasing architectural features of a house. Used creatively objects can dramatically alter the entire ambience of a room.

Attractive displays can become the focal point of a room. You need not restrict yourself to just the living room. An attractive object can become the focal point of any room - kitchens and bathrooms included.

Adding objects need not be expensive; use your imagination and originality to collect and creatively exhibit objects for an effect that is truly yours. These practical tips could help you get some ideas on how to choose accessories and arrange them to give neutral interiors a stamp of individuality and distinction. If you have a collection of bells, idols, kettles or mugs, to suggest a few, group them together and highlight them with lighting for visual impact.

A collection of picture postcards framed attractively and hung up on a blank wall, or above a piece of furniture will create an appealing display.

Buying paintings can be an expensive proposition. If your budget does not permit, go in for prints and frame them. There's nothing like attractive paintings to liven up walls.

If you possess an original, expensive painting use accent lighting to make the painting stand out. If you have one spectacular expensive object avoid grouping it with other items. A unique sculpture, a priceless crystal bowl or an antique piece will benefit from being displayed in solitary splendour. You could use accent lighting or a table lamp to highlight the object.

Persian carpets and striking wall hangings can be hung on walls to give a truly dramatic effect. If you have a collection of crystal or blue pottery, or any such exotic items, make a special display shelf to draw attention to them.

Use alcoves or niches to display single, stunning pieces like masks or vases.

A strategically placed glass jar with a money plant can make a dull kitchen or bathroom look charming. To brighten up your kitchen display spices in attractive labelled bottles or buy a spice shelf. There are so many in the market today - find one that suits your budget.

Brighten up dull bathrooms with coordinated accessories - soap dishes, towel racks and stands. A pretty shower curtain can alter the appearance of the bathroom.

Arrange objects on lace doilies and place mats on side tables and sideboards. They add an elegant touch to the room.

Today photo frames come in a wide variety of shapes, colours and designs.

A group of attractively framed photographs give bedrooms a cosy feel and are an instant pick-me-up when you are feeling down!

Decorative candles and stands come in a fabulous variety of designs and colours. Place them on your dining table, side tables, centre tables or bedside tables for effect. Mirrors are another fabulous decorating tool and also serve to make rooms larger. Experiment with circular and rectangular mirrors with coloured borders for a dazzling look.

If you have a collection of odd china plates, group them together and hang them on the wall for a truly charming effect.

The key to decorating with objects is your own creativity and taste.

Experiment and have fun. Move things around till you find a look that pleases you. Mix and match expensive items with bargain goods, scout around in antique shops, pick up anything that catches your fancy. Add little touches to emphasise a nook or corner. Your rooms will come dramatically alive!
