Kanjirankuda : Committee awards compensation by Ramani Kangaraarachchi A payment of compensation of Rs. 50,000 each for those who were killed in the recent incident occurred in Kanjirankuda has been recommended by a committee headed by Air Vice Marshal Harry Goonetilake. The Chairman said, "those who were injured were not recommended for compensation because they were on a demonstration which turned to violence against the State. The same argument could have been used against those who were injured but due to dire poverty of dependents of the deceased. On compassionate grounds, the committee thought some consideration should be given to the plight of their next-of-kins. A similar payment was paid to victims of Bindunuwewa and the Mawanella incidents earlier. The committee has also recommended to transfer all police and military personnel every six months from those areas, and to review the out dated manuals and instructions of the Armed Forces and the Police relating to riot control, the right of self defence and the use of minimum force to obtain the desired results. Minister of Interior John Amaratunga addressing the media personnel after reviewing the report said that the government persue the report of the committee, and also find ways and means to avoid reputation in the future. He directed S. Vivekanandan one of the committee to forward true picture of the incident to the LTTE leadership. A separate report addressed to the Committee Chairman was submitted by Vivekananda with certain disagreements and observations. |
