Curbing leprosy in Asia: Sri Lanka ahead

Sri Lanka is ahead of other countries in Asia in curbing leprosy, because of its successful treatment, its control and the health policies followed here, according to Indian medical specialists.

A special project was launched at the Kegalle Hospital recently to treat leprosy patients becoming disfigured owing to the delay in seeking treatment. The program was launched with the assistance of a team of Indian medical specialists, who also assisted in training specialists to perform surgery and treat those disfigured by the disease. The project is implemented under the program launched by the WHO to completely eradicate leprosy from South Asia. The Indian specialists emphasize that medical advice should be obtained if there is a painless patch on the body. (Lankapuvath)
