Kallis gets South Africa back on top

Ranjan Anandappa reporting from South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 9 - A patient innings by Jacques Kallis and the banning of controversial fast bowler Ruchira Perera for running on the batting area of the pitch combined to halt a Sri Lankan fightback on the second day of the first Test at the Wanderers Stadium Saturday.

Kallis made an unbeaten 75 as South Africa reached 378 for seven at the close of play, a first innings lead of 186 after Sri Lanka were bowled out for 192 Friday.

Sri Lanka partially sprang back into contention through the fire power their pacemen Chaminda Vaas and debutant Hasantha Fernando when they clamped on the breaks on the rampaging South Africans but it is unlikely that they could prevent a relentlessly march towards South Africa gaining a substantial first innings lead.

But Perera's ban, which followed two official warnings, reduced Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya's bowling options as Kallis, assisted by Mark Boucher, Shaun Pollock and Andrew Hall, set about repairing the damage.

Sri Lanka did their cause no good by conceding 62 extras, only nine short of the world record, including 31 no-balls.

Perera was warned twice by umpire Russell Tiffin for running on the "protected" area of the pitch in his follow through.

Perera switched ends but was warned again by umpire Daryl Harper after bowling two balls in his 11th over, the 55th of the innings.

He had to stop bowling and his over was completed by off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. Perera cannot bowl for the rest of the innings. It was the second major setback in the career of the left-armed Perera, who was reported by the umpires for having a suspect arm action during a Test against England at Lord's in May.

He returned to Sri Lanka for remedial coaching and this was his first match for Sri Lanka since the incident.

The Sri Lankan pace attack looked thin and seemed to have lost their rhythm with so many no balls being bowled.
