Three records on day one at Youth Sports Festival

Three new meet records were established by Ranjith Perera of Kurunegela in the men's putt shot, Warnapura Silva of Kalutara 800 metres men and K. M. A. D. T. Nelum of Ratnapura women's 800, metres and one record equalled by Priyangika Maduwanthi of Kurunegela women's high jump on day one of the XVI National Youth Sports Festival conducted by National Youth Services Council and held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Ranjith was responsible for the first record, throwing the iron ball to a new distance of 13.0 metres. W. M. S. K. Jayasundara of Polonnaruwa also improved on the existing mark 12.10 metres. K. Chaminda Pradeep of Matara held the previous record of 12.4 metres in 1991.

Warnapura accounted for the second record when he 'clocked 1.54.45 secs. in the 800 metres. The other two placed winners Punchihewa Chamal of Hambantota 1.54.4 secs. second and Indika Ekanayake of Kurunegela 1.54.6 secs. third also improved on the earlier record held by V. Rathnakumara of Puttalam 1.54.07 secs. in 1997.

Nelum broke the third record in the women's 800 metres returning time of 2.20.7 secs while runner-up R. Sujani Niluka of Matara 2.21.4 secs erased off the earlier record held by Olanthi Wijayasunder of Gale 2.21.95 secs in 1997.

Priyangani equalled the women's high jump mark going over the bare 1.60 metres. I. N. Ranaweera Rathnayake, of Matara also cleared 1.60 metres in 1998. A notebale feature was that Mithila Kanagasingam a University student of Jaffna representing the Jaffna District won the women's 200 metres 27.0 secs. Outstation athletes dominated the proceedings, winning 13 out of 14 finals worked off yesterday. Johnston Fernando, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports was the chief guest and declared open the festival.

Today 15 events will be worked off, commencing at 8.30 a.m. The overall champions will be awarded the challenge trophy and the men's and women's outstanding athletes will be selected and special awards will be presented.

Joseph Michael Perera, Speaker, will be the chief guest today.

200 Metres: 1. D. M. S. Dissanayake (Kurunegala) 22.3 secs, 2. M. D. Chandana Nadeera (Galle) 22.7 secs, 3. H. Prasanna Kalum Dharmasena (Kegalle) 22.8 secs.

800 Metres: 1. T. Warnapura Silva (Kalutara) 1:54.4 secs (New Meet record), 2. Punchihewa Chamal (Hambantota) 1:54.4 secs, 3. E. M. L. Indika Ekanayake (Kurunegala) 1:54.6 secs. 4x100 Metres Relay: 1. Kandy District 4.34 secs, 2. Kurunegala Women 4.34 secs, 3. Galle District 4.40 secs.

Women

Long Jump: 1. A. K. N. K. Deraniyagala (Matale) 5.27 metres, 2. K. Mithila (Jaffna) 5.09 metres, 3. W. Nipurina Nilangani (Puttalam) 4.99 metres.

3,000 Metres: 1. R. A. Dulani Rupasinghe (Gampaha) 10:54.7 secs, 2. B. G. Lakmini Anuradhi (Nuwara Eliya) 11:03.4 secs, 3. M. H. K. Inoka Wasanthi (Matara) 11:08.3 secs.

Putt Shot: 1. W. Shyamali Dilhani Fernando (Puttalam) 8.91 metres, 2. L. Wathsala Sivanthi Perera (Gampaha) 8.83 metres, 3. E. G. Nilmini (Galle) 8.82 metres.

Javelin Throw: 1. Yasanthi Koralage (Ratnapura) 36.05 metres, 2. Ajantha Nilmini (Matara) 32.47 metres, 3. L. G. I. K. Pathiraja (Kurunegala) 30.48 metres.

High Jump: 1. R. K. A. Priyangika Maduwanthi (Kurunegala) 1.60 metres, 2. R. M. Nadeeka Sageewani (Puttalam) 1.56 metres, 3. A. P. Nilmini (Matara) 1.56 metres.

200 Metres: 1. Mithila Kanagasingam (Jaffna) 27.0 secs, 2. D. M. Anoma Lakmalie (Badulla) 27.0 secs, 3. A. K. M. K. Deraniyagala (Matale) 27.6 secs.

800 Metres: 1. K. M. A. D. T. Nelum Kularatne (Ratnapura) 2:20.7 secs (New meet record), 2. R. Sujani Niluka (Matara) 2:21.4 secs, 3. Buddhika Mettananda (Kandy) 2:25.0 secs.

4x100 Metres Relay: 1. Badulla District 51.7 secs, 2. Kurunegala District 52.0 secs, 3. Galle District 52.7 secs.
