by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) has been entrusted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to conduct eight international tournaments, including the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV) as well as a Women's Circuit event involving top professionals in Colombo next year (2003).

The Chief Executive Officer of the SLTA, Boshan Dayaratne, told the Sunday Observer that the Davis Cup will be worked off at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from June 16 to 22 involving Singapore, Bangladesh, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

The Women's Circuit event of the women's Tennis Association (WTA) with prize money totalling US dollars 10,000 is scheduled to be staged at the NTC from August 18 to 24 and will see world ranked players. There will also be three Men's Futures tournaments, also involving world ranked players from February 24 to March 2, August 25 to 31 and October 27 to November 2. Each has prize money of US Dollars 10,000.

Dayaratne said that there was only one Futures tournament this year (2002) where 68 players from countries all over the world including Europe, Asia, Middle East, South America etc, played but the SLTA expects to draw more players for the three Futures tournaments next year (2003).

In addition, there will also be three junior international tournaments too in Colombo next year. The 20th Junior (under-18) ITF Championship is scheduled for January and another in September, while the South Asian Junior Championship too is scheduled to be staged at the NTC in January, but not yet confirmed.
