Blignaut strikes back for Zimbabwe

HARARE, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Andy Blignaut struck twice in three balls after lunch in a Zimbabwe fight-back on the first day of the first test against Pakistan in Harare on Saturday.

But Pakistan remained in control, scoring 118 runs in the second session and at tea they were 217 for four after being put in to bat.

Yousuf Youhana was alone at the crease on 53 after Inzamam-ul-Haq on 39 skyed what became the last ball before tea, from Henry Olonga, to substitute fielder Mark Vermeulen at mid-on.

Younis Khan, who scored 40, cut hard at a Blignaut delivery and was well held low down by Dion Ebbrahim in the gully in the sixth over after lunch.

That ended a stand of 115 for the second wicket Younis Khan shared with Taufeeq Umar.

Two balls later Blignaut removed Taufeeq Umar with a brilliant catch by first slip Andy Flower.

Taufeeq Umar scored 75 in two and half hours at the crease facing 121 balls and hitting eight fours and a six.

Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell chose to field first on the strength of a damp pitch and the humid conditions aided the fast bowlers in the first hour. Batting conditions then eased and runs flowed freely.

The only victim of the first session was Salim Elahi, who pushed forward to a straightening delivery from Blignaut and edged it to Campbell at second slip to be dismissed for two in the fifth over.

The day began badly for Pakistan when Rashid Latif was ruled out with a neck injury.
