Lions marathon road race Kalutara to Galle Face today Lions and Lion Ladies of District 306A has organised a marathon race today from Kalutara Clock Tower to Galle Face, covering a distance of 42 kilometres. The marathon is sponsored by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Sri Lanka AAA will also help. It has been a venture by the International Association of Lions District 306A to get the youth of the country involved in gainful sports activities so that they will be kept away from the unrest that seemed to take the better of them in the recent past. Under the guidance of District Governor 306A Lion Parakrama Kurukulasuriya, Project Chairman Lion Srilal Fernando and the committee have all worked hard to make this event a success. In keeping to the rules and regulations of international athletics body, the marathon will be held as an open event which will provide all the opportunities to the youth to participate. The organisers have made it look somewhat spectacular by awarding cash prizes of Rs. 25,000 for the winner, Rs. 15,000 to the first runner-up and Rs. 10,000 to the second runner-up. There will be a whole lot of other prizes for the minor place winners, such as seven consolation prizes of Rs. 5,000 each and a plaque, Rs. 2,000 and a certificate to first 15 competitors who reach the finish line. There will also be a certificate to all the participants in the race. Minister of Labour Mahinda Samarasinghe is expected to flag-off the runners. |
