Defence Services, Matale and Schools 'golds' qualify for semis

Defence Services Hockey Association and Matale Hockey Association finished as champions of Group 'A' and Group 'B' respectively and qualified to play in the semi finals of the 30th Junior Hockey Nationals organised by the Kandy District Hockey Association in conjunction with the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation which was worked off at Police Grounds, Kandy and University of Peradeniya hockey grounds yesterday under not so favourable weather conditions.

Sri Lanka Schools 'Golds' was the third team to qualify for the semi finals and the fourth team will be decided between Kandy HA and Colombo HA.

The best match of the day was the tussle between Defence Services and Sri Lanka Schools 'Golds' at Peradeniya when the schoolboys fought back to hold the Defense Services to a one all draw. I. Herath and M. B. Herath Umpired.

Matale HA almost blasted Kandy's hopes of entering the semi finals when they beat them 3 - 2 after leading 2 - 0 at the breather. Matale who led 3 - 0 at one stage staved off a late challenge by Kandy who scored two quick goals but the fight back came too late in the day.

Matale scored through Kusal Ratnayake (1), N. Hewage (1) and S. B. Dissanayake (1) while Kandy scored through I. C. Palipane and M. T. Mahes.

But in the last match of the day in Court A Police grounds, Kandy drubbed Matara 5 - 0 in pouring rain and bad light and kept their chances alive for a berth in the semi finals.

Goal scorers for Kandy were J. B. Dissanayake (2), I. C. Palipane, (1), M. Munasinghe (1) and Harsha Gunawardena (1).

Wennappuwa sprang a surprise when they trounced the strong Mercantile team 4 - 1 after leading 2-0 at lemons.

In another match Sri Lanka Schools 'Maroons' surprised Kandy by holding them to a scoreless draw and the home team dropped valuable points from this match.

At Peradeniya Sri Lanka Schools 'Maroons beat Matara 3 - 1 after leading 1 - 0 at lemons.

The match between Colombo HA and the Matara HA could not be finished due to rain and bad light and at the time the play was called off, Colombo were leading 1 - 0. Thirty minutes play of this match remains and if necessary, the remaining play will be continued this morning.
