Protection against power shortages

Damages caused by power shortages do not leave finger prints and such damage can be huge. The aim of American Power Conversion (APC) is to protect customers from every possible threat caused by power as quality of power is the requirement of corporates.

Anand Iyer, Country General Manager APC India said that raw power is sufficient for electrical items, but for the IT industry, 230 volts clean, consistent power supply is a must as spikes and surges affect IT devices such as PCs while most hardware problems are connected to the quality of power. Low quality uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and stabilisers cannot handle power problems. Therefore, the quality of UPS plays a very important role in solving such problems. "A good power protection strategy is necessary to be in business," he noted.

"The power protection needs of various companies are different and our role is to help Sri Lankan companies to access the best power protection strategies."

Iyer said APC's focus on Sri Lanka has increased due to the potential of the country's market and the demand for APC products. The company is exploring all opportunities to increase its presence in Sri Lanka through channel meets, events and training programs.APC provides different power solutions depending on the requirements of the industry such as for home segment, network power solutions, server network and telecom power solutions as well as solutions for enterprises and industries.

Balu Pandian, Marketing Manager for APC India said the UPS for the home segment, the UPS AVR Pro, has a capacity of 300 watts and includes three battery backup outlets, surge protection outlets, automatic voltage regulation, automatic file saving capability, intelligent battery management, push button circuit breaker, telephone fax, modem and DSL line protection and long lasting auto recharging, user replaceable battery. The Smart UPS, which supports network power solutions, has a capacity of 5kva and is designed for server protection and small networks. It has an in-built battery with a life span of two years. The main feature is the button test which enables the system administrator to check the weakening battery as well as the status of the UPS. APC recommends the rack model for use in ATMs.

Symmetra power array is recommended for financial, retail and government sectors. It is the world's first redundant scalable user serviceable and manageable power protection solution. APC also provides power and management accessories including external battery solutions, external service bypass panel, powerchute network shutdown, web/snmp management card, masterswitch, out-of-band management card and the environmental monitoring card. American Power Conversion, incorporated in March 1981, was founded by three electronic power engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Over the years, it has developed a global, end-to-end, product offering targeted at four strategic application areas: Home and Small Office; Business Networks; Access Providers and Data Centres and Facilities.

APC now employs over 5,000 people worldwide, and is listed on the Fortune 1000 and S&P 500 indices.
