The actress who has staged so many make-behave weddings is going to face the real thing. As usual trying to get a few words from Sangeetha is no easy task. But perseverance often pays off. And waiting out the morning chores of wedding preparations and photo shoots, I manage to hitch a conversation with her at night, while she's driving home with her future hubby Roshantha, listening to some romantic music. Me (over the phone): So how did the two of you meet? Sangeetha: Well, we've met a couple of times at functions before, but what made it really click was our meeting in Stockhom, Sweden, last April.I was there representing Salelu Varama. He was there with five businessmen and a Minister. The Sri Lankan ambassador hosted a dinner for the minister. I too was invited. It was at the dinner table that things began to click. Roshantha was seated on my right. I got into a bit of an argument with a foreigner and things were getting rather heated up when Roshantha told me in Sinhala that it was an unwanted and unnecessary conversation. I was shocked at first, but saw the truth in what he was saying and kept quiet. Later on I thanked him and we exchanged phone numbers. I never really expected him to contact me after that but he did. Me: So when exactly did sparks begin to fly between the two of you? Sangeetha: It was a gradual process. We began as friends, got to know each other and I grew to like him and he liked me. And well you know.. Me: What was your first kiss like? Sangeetha: Please. Don't embarrass me. Me: Didn't know actresses were ever shy. They certainly seem to like the publicity. Sangeetha: I'm a human being. Me: Oh well, how did the proposal come about? Sangeetha: In a traditional way.Professor Anton spoke to my parents recommending him. We both come from similar families and social backgrounds. My parents spoke to me. I said yes and so it happened. Me: What do you like most about him? Sangeetha: His honesty. He is very honest. Brutally honest in fact. I like him for it. He is also very down to earth and simple. Me: Anything annoying about him? Sangeetha: He is a bit too quiet at times. I talk and talk and he'll just listen nicely. Makes me feel a bit foolish some times. Me: What does he like about you? Sangeetha: (She pauses to ask him the question and comes back on line)-He says everything.(Boy does she has a sweet fellow) Me: What are your differences? Sangeetha: I am very much of a soppy, sentimentle kind of person. He's not. He's also very calm.I'm hyper and excitable. Me: Any special moments together? Sangeetha: Yes. The night I won the Sarasavi Awards. Walking out of the BMICH with a bunch of flowers in my hand, he was right at the gate waiting for me, which was really sweet. That night our two families, his and mine went out for dinner together to celebrate. Me: How is he handling the publicity? Sangeetha: He tries to be nice and accommodating, but he is very shy and embarrassed inside. Me: What do you feel about getting married? Sangeetha: Nervous.I mean this is going to be the real thing. It's not like another act.I am excited but looking forward for it too. Me: What sort of a wedding are your'll planning to have? Sangeetha: Oh, a traditional one. Me: Details? Sangeetha: No way. It's to be a surprise.I don't want to spoil it. Me: How do you feel marriage will change your life? Sangeetha: Things will change in the sense I'm sharing my life with someone else. I've got to think of another person.Talking and making decisions together. However it doesn't mean being steam rolled by another person. Roshantha is a professional.I'm a professional. He is not a demanding dominating person. We both respect each other and that's what is important. Me: Any last words? Sangeetha: Yes. I want to thank the people for bringing me this far. If not for them I wouldn't be here. I've enjoyed the last twelve years as an actress very much. Thank you everyone by Farah Macan Markar |
