Inaugural Colours Nite : 'Thomian Blue' for Jeewan by PELHAM JURIANSZ Young outstanding allrounder Jeewan Mendis became the first recipient of the coveted Thomian blue at the inaugural Thomian Colours Nite at the Thomian sports Complex at Mount Lavinia yesterday. Jeewan received his award from another distinguished old boy Chandra Schaffter, an outstanding sportsman in his day. The Thomian team comprising of Dilshan Gunawardene, Heshan Peiris, Denham Williams, Tharindu Fernando, Rashmilan Mohammed and Jeewan himself blended as a team and won the prestigious Lemonade trophy at the Schools Tournament this year. Warden David Ponniah, an outstanding opening batsman himself who was renowned for his century as a fresher in the "Big" Match, speaking at the Ceremony said that this is the only way that the school can recognise Coloursmen in all fields. Hitherto, colours were awarded only at the School Assemblies where the parents were not present and this is one way of showing appreciation to the Parents who have toiled hard behind the scenes to ensure that their off spring achieve the best. The Warden thanked all those who had organised the Colours nite especially Ajith Gunawardene and J.B. Pieris and their dedicated team. Chandra Schaffter, a double International and captain at Cricket, vice captain in hockey, skipper of "Fives" was the Chief guest at the ceremony. Chief Guest Schaffter said that it was a great honour to be the Chief Guest and what he had learnt at S. Thomas' especially on the field of Sports has stood him in good stead in life. "I have a special message to those who were awarded colours. There wee a little over 100 boys who won colours amongst about 2000 students. In the field of Sports all compete but a few are chosen for honour. This is true especially on the Cricket field where only 11 can play. All of you who won colours here today should do nothing to tarnish that image of the school you represent. The first and foremost lesson in sports is discipline. First and foremost you have to discipline yourself. In today's cricketing world there is much talk about sledging and how well the Sri Lankans especially Sangakkara have taken to it, but in my book there should not be any sledging. We, as Sri Lankans should set an example. In our days, when we so much as looked at the umpire we would be reprimanded by Warden de Saram. I hope that Warden Ponniah would do the same." Colours were awarded for Badminton, Cricket (1st and 2nd X1), Hockey, Scouting, Squash, Athletics, Cadetting, Diving, Rugby, Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, Karate, Rowing, Swimming, Table Tennis and Water Polo. |
