Slimline lasses beat Army in rugby 7's to annex Cup

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Slimline, who were the runners-up last year, won the Cup category beating Army by 10 points (2 tries) to 5 (1 try) after extra time (it was 5-all at full time) at the 2nd Women's Seven-a-Side Rugby Championships of the Western Province RFU at Longden Place yesterday.

In the two semi-finals, Army beat KV (last year's winners) 10-5 in extra time, while Slimline beat Central Province RFU 10-0. It was quite creditable for Central Province, as they travelled to Colombo on their own by public transport and had to field two players from Army too to make up the side. In addition, the SLRFU have five technical officers in the region, but none accompanied the Central Province lasses.

Hatton National Bank won the Plate beating North Central Province RFU 'B' by 5 points (1 try) to nil. There was no scoring at half-time. In the semi-finals, HNB beat Air Force 19-0, while North Central Province RFU beat Tristar 'B' 19-0.

Havelocks, comprising foreigners attached as teachers in international schools, won the Bowl category beating Tristar 'A' by 10 points (2 tries) to 5 (1 try) after leading 5-0 at half-time. In the semi-finals, Havelocks beat North Central Province 'A' 15-0, while Tristar 'A' received a bye.

Deputy President of the SLRFU, and President of the WPRFU, Mohan Balasuriya was the chief guest and distributed the awards.

This tournament served as a trial to pick a side for next year's Asian Zone Women's 7s to be staged in Hong Kong on March 27 and 28.
