Hong Kong Bank certain of winning mercantile tennis title Hong Kong Bank made certain of the Mercantile tennis title by taking a commanding 52 point lead over two-time winner National Development Bank (123 points) at the Mercantile Tennis Championship sponsored by Janashakthi Insurance. SriLankan Airlines are a distant third with 72 points. Two finals are yet to be worked off. They are Mixed Doubles and Men's over-35 Doubles. A former Davis Cup player Dishan Herath of Hong Kong Bank won the Men's Division I singles title defeating Ganendran Subramaniam of R & G Sports in a three-setter (6-4, 5-7, 6-2), while Romesh Perera of SriLankan Airlines won the Division I beating Kumar Gunawardene of NDB 6-0, 6-1. The Division III went to Ishantha Samarasinghe of Hong Kong Bank who received a walkover from T. Ranasinghe of SriLankan Airlines. Rajiv Rajapakse of Eric Rajapakse and Isuru Gunasekera won the Men's Doubles title beating Rohan de Silva (Gower Investments) and Ganendran Subramaniam (R & G Sports) in a three-setter (6-2, 5-7, 6-3), while Senani Silva of NDB won the Women's singles beating Dilini Satkunarajah of Hong Kong Bank 6-1, 6-0. Monica Manatunga and Nirmali Paldano (both of SriLankan Airlines) won the Women's Doubles beating Savitha Cruz and Rasanka Wickremanayake of Hong Kong Bank in straight sets (6-1, 6-0). Former Davis Cup "star" and national champion Arjun Fernando of Hong Kong Bank won the Men's over-35 singles beating NDB's Arjan Perera 7-6, 6-3, while Gavin Perera of Hong Kong Bank received a walkover from Gerald Mendis of SriLankan Airlines in the Men's over-45 singles final. Ravi Thambiyah of Renuka Group and Nihal Welikala of NDB won the Men's over-45 doubles title beating Sam Rajah and Ajitha Pasqual of Hong Kong Bank 6-0, 6-1. The prize distribution is scheduled to be held at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath on December 15 with C. T. A. Schaffter, Managing Director of Janashakthi Insurance as the chief guest.
