A model primary school project making kids smarter IBM Corporation has joined hands with the Ministry of Education to implement the IBM KidSmart Program. It is designed to enhance the learning experience for children between the ages of three and seven. The program, which utilises the Young Explorer Unit, is an expansion of IBM's K-12 school reinventing education initiative. The New Model Primary Schools Project of the Education Ministry is collaborating with the KidSmart Program by absorbing the program's technology and expertise. The Primary Schools Project's objective is to lessen the demand for popular schools. It also expects to minimise the difference between the popular and the 'not so popular' schools. Introducing computers to schools under this project will attract more students to these schools and enhance the resource base of such schools. The program provides the latest in hardware, software and educational materials. It also supports teachers through teacher training programs. So that they are acquainted with the software and hardware knowledge to explore ways of effectively integrating IT technology into their teaching programs. Currently, the partners of the program include Early Childhood Development Department of the Open University, Early Childhood Development Unit of the Sarvodaya Social Empoverment Division and SOS Children's Villages. During 2002, IBM Corporate Community Relations provided 20 Young Explorer Units to 20 selected primary schools around the country where there is adequate infrastructure to implement such a program. |
