The Oasis : splendour amidst unspoilt nature

The Oasis Resort, Hambantota is a perfect creation of nature. It is cuddled at the edge of the Indian Ocean with miles of glorious beach and a tranquil lake amidst nature and coastal scenery.

Tourists who travel almost 230 km from Colombo to The Oasis, through the dry zone of Matara, along a beautiful beach stretch, are amazed to see a beautiful resort with full of greenery, a perfect creation of nature. The resort stands amidst a marvellously designed landscape, resembling a beautiful botanical garden. The resort has ten self styled chalets and 38 comfortable, well apportioned rooms, and two deluxe suites, all equipped with modern facilities that a star hotel offers.

All chalets and rooms are air conditioned, with telephone, TV, piped music, hot water, elegant bath tubs, separate showers and toilets, private balcony and terrace, 24-hour room service and laundry. The deluxe suites are carpeted and beautifully furnished with large lounge areas. The 'Nelum' restaurant offers its guests a taste of A'la Carte' menu of Sri Lankan, Western, Eastern, Chinese and International cuisine, and a variety of desserts with a spread of tropical fruits.

For the health conscious, The Oasis offers a large pool, Jacuzzi, well equipped gym, tennis court, beach volleyball, squash court and indoor games. The 'Bush Bar' which is well stocked, is a typical place to relax in the evening watching the panoramic view of the golden sunset. The resort offers its guests an opportunity to explore the wild life and nature of Sri Lanka at Yala and Uda Walawe National Parks, Sri Lanka's two wildlife reserves, with its famous herds of elephants. The resort also offers tourists an opportunity to explore the bird sanctuaries of Bundala and Kalametiya where over 20,000 species of birds visit over the year.

The Oasis organises special excursions to archaeological and religious sites at Kataragama, one of the holiest locations to Buddhists and Hindus of Sri Lanka, Situlpawwa Rock Temple, historically significant as one of the greatest second century sites of scholarship, Kirinda to marvel the wonders of an ancient Sinhala Kingdom and Tissamaharama - a treasure trove of arte-crafts and architecture of civilization dating back to hundreds of years.

Mahaweli Reach all set for season

The festive season began at mahaweli Reach Hotel, Kandy on December 20, with the opening of the Cookie Hut, followed by the singing of carols on December 21 in which all guests participated.

A gala Christmas eve dinner will be offered to guests on December 24, with a wide spread of delicious cuisine, including roasted stuffed turkey, smoked ham, duck in orange sauce, and a variety of Christmas eve salads.

On Christmas day, a wide spread of Western and Sri Lankan cuisine will offered to guests in the form of a lunch buffet, at which a special dish named 'Chicken Jerusalem' will be offered. It will be 'BBQ under the Moon and Stars' on December 26. The menu includes mouth-watering roast leg of beef and other BBQ items, and 'Corn on the Cob'.

December 31 night will be full of prizes and surprises , assures Director General Manager, Mahaweli Reach, Mohan Panabokke. While 'Mike and the Hezonites' will keep guests feet-tapping throughout the night, at the dinner dance where 'West meets East' guests will be offered a wide spread of food items, at an International buffet. A host of surprises await the guests at the breaking of the New Year. In the wee hours of the New Year, guests will be offered a traditional 'Kiribath' breakfast.

Reach for the stars this festive season at Lanka Oberoi

The festive season at the Lanka Oberoi begins today with the Kiddies Christmas Party. All your kids will ever want this Christmas, will be there at the biggest bash in town - a Christmas party like none before, an absolute carnival of fun. On December 24, Lanka Oberoi will offer its guests an extensive and irresistible International Dinner Buffet accompanied by Christmas music by Blue Rhythms, inclusive of a glass of Champagne or Eggnog. The London Grill will offer an extravagant six-course menu dinner, inclusive of either a glass of Champagne or Eggnog. Scintillating piano music will be provided by Peter Prins.

On Christmas day, Chandani Hettiarachchi fills the lobby with the joyous sounds of Christmas. A traditional Christmas brunch will be offered by The Taprobane with festive music. The Taprobane has also planned a delicious Christmas dinner buffet inclusive of either a glass of Champagne or Eggnog. The London Grill will offer its guests a classy Christmas dinner, a fabulous six-course set menu accompanied by soft and soothing piano music by Peter Prins. A complimentary glass of Champagne of Eggnog will be offered to keep the Christmas spirit high.

Herald in the New year at The Golden Ballroom at a gala dinner dance featuring Colombo's top bands, Sohan and the Experiments and Nimal and the Equals, with guest artists Desmond de Silva, Dalreen Suby and Australian saxophonist Greg Faith. On the cards is also a sumptuous international dinner buffet on December 31, followed by a breakfast buffet in the wee hours of January 1.

On December 31, the London Grill will offer an exclusive seven-course set menu with soft piano melodies.

A sparkling toast to the year gone by, and say cheers to the New Year at the London Grill. Bid farewell to 2002 at the Taprobane with a feast of an International Buffet inclusive of a complimentary glass of Champagne, with live music by Alfie and Shyami. The Indian Restaurant will offer an authentic Indian Buffet to spice-up your spirits on December 31, while the day dawns for a new year. Bid farewell to the year gone by and welcome the new one with Tilak backed by Tribe at The Lounge of on December 31.

The Atrium Lobby of The Lanka Oberoi will come alive to the soulful sounds of the Menaka Singers as they perform those merry old Christmas favourites to symbolize that it is indeed Christmas time in the city. A great chance for family and friends to gather round, sit back and let the spirit of Christmas overwhelm you. The choir which began performing on December 21, will continue until December 24, evening at The Atrium Lobby of The Lanka Oberoi.

Seasonal delights at the Taj Samudra Hotel began on December 21, with the harmonious voices of a Japanese choir, heard in the lobby, until December 24 singing world famous carols.

Galadari begins festive season with a 'Boom'

The festive season at Galadari Hotel began last week with the re-launching of its night club 'Colombo 2000' as 'The BOOM'.

Best wine sommeliers - Mohideen and Wasantha

A.M. Mohideen, Wine Sommelier at the Hilton Jaic Tower was selected as the outstanding winner of the 8th Wine Appreciation Program and Sommelier Competition presented by E & J Galle. Mohideen joined the hospitality industry over three years ago as a waiter at the beautifully located 'Sunset Grill' at Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa. It was there that Mohideen initially excelled in increasing wine sales thereby nurturing his passion for fine wines. Mohideen joined Hilton JAIC only two months ago as a captain and has already earned a reputation as a shining star on the wine scene.

A.M. Wasantha de silva of the Culture Club Resort, Kandalama, Dambulla won the second prize at the 8th Wine Appreciation Program. Wasantha is a Steward in the Food and Beverage Department of the Culture Club, and has a very bright future in the wine scene of Sri Lanka's hospitality industry, Assistant Manager Culture Club, Srijith Gooneratne said.
