Ordering drinks

Beverages can be either alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Alcohol is consumed before, after or during the meal. Wine is a popular drink during meals and at formal and informal occasions.

There are three types of wines (Red, Rose and White) of which the alcohol percentage ranges from four to 16. You should have a general idea with regard to the selection of wines when you select your meal. When you take fish for the meal, you should order white wine. Rose wine is more compatible with chicken. For those who consume pork, lamb or game, the option should be red wine.

* If your host is ordering a bottle of wine or any other brand of liquor and consults you, it is certainly in order to allow the guest to decide; especially when your knowledge about liquor is limited. The ideal reaction in this situation is for you to say "I am sure you know more about liquor than I do, so I would prefer to leave the choice to you". Please do not hesitate to compliment him on his selection, no sooner you have the first sip. If your host is a connoisseur, grab the opportunity and ask for more details of the liquor he ordered for you.

* If you have ordered beer, you should select a large glass or a mug. One should pour beer into the glass or mug up to the highest level without spilling. Job seekers should, as much as possible, avoid hard liquor, unless the post for which they apply is a senior managerial post for which maturity and a certain degree of inter-personal relations are demanded.

* Extreme care must be exercised when you converse after consuming liquor. Most people become boisterous when they exceed their limit of consumption and tend to talk all sorts of gibberish, degrading the dignity of the occasion or the position they hold. A highly qualified applicant once lost a good opportunity at a corporate level because of his unsavoury behaviour and utterances. It was only at this stage, it was revealed, that the applicant was an alcoholic.

* It is advisable to avoid any kind of liquor at a luncheon interview. Soft drinks such as Coca-Cola, orange juice or ginger beer would be ideal for young job aspirants.

* If consumption of alcohol is unavoidable depending on the situation, one can certainly have liquor within the permissible limit. Do not consume the entire contents of your glass in the first round itself. Shandy (Mixers)

Over the years, it has been extensively tested and proved that certain types of mixers ideally suit certain types of alcoholic drinks.

* Although beer does not need a shandy, some women ask for Seven-Up, Sprite or Lemonade.

* Whisky is served in pegs. Whisky is served with soda, water or On the Rocks (ice).

* The ideal shandy for gin is either lemon or orange juice.

* Rum is served in a tall glass (high bowl glass). Coke with a slice of lemon or ginger ale is the fine combination.

*No shandy is required for vodka which is a colourless drink.

* Brandy is another fussy drink like wine which is served in a balloon shaped glass (goblet). When drinking, the glass is held on the palm allowing the handle below the palm. No shandy or ice is required. Brandy is usually mixed with ginger ale. It has digestive powers.

*No shandy is required for cinzano or martinis.
