Give your home a new look with... : Victorian cushion craft

by Carol Aloysius

Imaginative and innovative artist and home decor expert Ramanie Arseculeratne, has just come up with an unusual and practical craft for housewives looking for novel ways to add colour and glamour to their homes this festive season: Victorian cushion craft.

"This delightful craft can be done in your home. It can be used by the house proud woman to decorate her walls with unusual wall hangings, enhance her bedrooms with exquisitely decorated pillow cases and bed covers and even used to create an eyecatching dress for the fashion conscious woman", she explains.

Cost-wise the new craft she hopes to introduce to her pupils at her Academy of arts and crafts from the beginning of next year, is ideal for the low budget woman since it makes use of left over fabrics as in the case of patchwork craft. " It involves the minimum of expenses. All you need is some left over material from your sewing, a small tool which is available in the market to help create the designs, and of course lots of imagination. If you are a creative person , this is just the right hobby for you " is her message to all housewives.

As in the case of patchwork, this new craft allows for a great deal of flexibility."You can use any type of fabric, and any colour combinations. You can even change the colours and even the fabrics if the result is not satisfactory", she says.

If the end products are of a high quality, this versatile artist is optimistic that they will prove to be very popular both in the local market and even abroad. As she asks;" many housewives abroad have turned this craft into a profitable business after having mastered it. So why not our own housewives?"

Ramanie will showcase her new creations for the first time this Christmas and New Year season. " Customers will have a choice of both traditional and ethnic designs on the creations I will be introducing this season."

She is confident that most housewives who see these products will want to follow suit and learn to master this new craft in the new year." it will be an ideal outlet for their creative abilities", she says.
