School uniforms only on request

by Anjana Gamage

The student population of 3.6 million and 19,000 piriwena students in the entire country will receive 8.5 million metres of school uniform material for the year 2003, Secretary to the School Education Ministry H.M. Sirisena told the Sunday Observer.

According to sources, official ceremony of uniform distribution will be held during the second week of January.

" It is 20 percent less than last year's distribution. Last year we did distribute cloth material among all students. But this year, we are distributing only on requests we had received," Sirisena pointed out. The government has imported a quota of the cloth material from China and has obtained the rest from local producers.

Salusala is the main packing, cutting and transport centre to distribute uniform materials for year 2003. Meanwhile, the free text books distribution among students for the year 2003, including North and East has completed.

With Free Education system in the country, providing free text books was first introduced, after independence to the State-Assisted Schools. The mid-day meal and a cup of milk was added to that during the tenure of former Prime Minister W.Dahanayake while he was the Minister of Education under the premiership of late Prime Minister S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike.

The provision of free uniforms was introduced by the Ministry of Education during the UNP regime under President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1989. Issue of free school uniform was first distributed in 1993.
