Jak sapling planting ceremony at Wellawaya today The National Jak Development Project's (NJDP) 17th planting ceremony under its scheme of planting 100,000 jak saplings throughout the country will be held today at Wellawaya, Moneragala. 2000 jak saplings will be planted in the catchment area of the Malewanayaya tank, to enrich its environment. Jak, a tropical fruit with different varieties, some with the ability to bear fruit within a short period of one-and-a half years, is increasingly being used for the purpose of reinforcing and enriching the environment. Planting jak saplings at the Malewanayaya tank catchment area is a project initiated by the Rotary Club of Colombo Central (RCCC) with the assistance of the residents of Wellawaya and the NJDP. It is organised by Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, Vice President and Project Manager of the RCCC. N. Padmanadan, President of Rotary District 3220 and Deputy Secretary of the Central Bank will be the chief guest on the occasion. Other guests of honour include, Imitiaz Ismail, Chairman, Sevana Lotteries, Suranjan Kodituwakku, President, Green Movement of Sri Lanka, D.P. Munaweera, Director, Upper Watershed Management Project, P.M. Dharmatilake, Deputy Director, UWMP and Nalin Ladduwahetti, Chairman ANCL. Meanwhile, 500 jak saplings were distributed among the residents of Ekala, Ja-Ela at the "Thuruliya Exhibition", an exhibition of plants and flowers which was inaugurated on Friday (20) at the Ekala Maha Vidyala grounds. Simultaneously, demonstrations and seminars were held introducing ways and means of making a household environment friendly, such as managing an environment-friendly compost barrel, recycling techniques and so on. Thuruliya exhibition is organised by gardeners of Gampaha district. |
