UN Atomic Energy official due here by VIMUKTHI FERNANDO Dr. Mohamed El Baradei, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Commander of the UN Mission in Afghanistan is scheduled to make an official visit to Sri Lanka tomorrow, December 23. Dr. El Baradei, has held a number of high level positions in the IAEA, including that of Legal Advisor and Assistant Director General for External Relations besides being a senior member of the IAEA Secretariat since 1984. His visit would strengthen the collaboration between Sri Lanka's Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) an affiliate of the IAEA and the Agency. He is scheduled to visit the AEA, the focal point in applications in nuclear technology in Sri Lanka, and hold discussions with its chairman, Prof. M. Prinath Dias. He will also meet Minister of Foreign Affairs Tyronne Fernando. The IAEA is an independent inter-governmental, science and technology-based organization in the United Nations family, that serves as the global focal point for nuclear co-operation. It was established in 1957 with the objective of accelerating and expanding the contribution of atomic energy for peace, health and prosperity throughout the world and ensuring assistance provided by it or at its request or under its supervision or control which is not utilised to boost any military purpose. This is the first ever visit of an IAEA General Secretary to Sri Lanka, a founder member of the Agency. |
